History of
Helotes Lions Club

The Lions Club of Helotes was chartered in September
1950 and incorporated with the Secretary of State.
It was immediately active in the community
conducting fund raising activities and supporting
local functions and providing service to various
individuals in need of assistance. Chief among the
fund-raising activities were dances held at one of
the community dance halls. Within 5 years the Club
acquired 3 acres of land and constructed a building.
About 2 acres of the land was used by the State of
Texas to construct a 4 lane divided highway in the
late 1960's. Since then an additional building of
2400 sq. ft. has been added.
The Club began publishing a newsletter "The
Tailtwister" that was distributed to residents in
Northwest Bexar County providing information about
events and happenings in the area. A charter member
of the Club, Sherwood Nelson, as a representative of
the club, was one of the individuals that helped
establish the Helotes Volunteer Fire Department.
Until the early 1970's most of the activities were
in support of the community. At that time we began
to become more active in District 2A-2 programs. A
Lioness District was formed (the first in the State)
with Marilyn Wilson as president it was one of the
leading clubs until the Lioness Program was ended.
Members of the Lions Club, from 1 to three members
at various capacities, were a part of the District
2A-2 Cabinet for approximately 20 years.
The Club members are still very active in the
community helping with various community functions.
The primary fund raising activity is conducting
bingo sessions twice per week. The proceeds are used
to support the local fire departments and police
department of Helotes and Grey Forest. The single
largest donation over the past years has been to the
Lions Stride for Sight program. In addition we have
made contributions to assist with flood victims and
tornado disasters in the region.
Our facilities are used by various organizations,
usually at no cost. Continuous use are by:
Helotes Festival Association, occasionally for functions supporting the local high
school activities, and in support of City of Helotes
activities, and by various other organizations and
Lions District 2A-2.
